A 37 year old woman bumped the palm of her hand while at home. Over the next few days she felt her hand swelling and becoming cold. She went to an urgent care center, an ER, and her family doctor over a 7 day period and was told each time that she had a sprain. Two days after being evaluated by her family doctor, she woke up with a “dead” hand. She was taken back to the ER where no blood flow was found. It was determined that she had suffered a blood clot in the palm of her hand which was impeding blood flow as it grew in size. She eventually underwent amputation of her arm above her elbow. The jury found against the family doctor, finding that Ben Barrett had proven that the patients symptoms at the time of that evaluation required a doppler test to determine blood flow in the hand. That test would have prevented the amputation.
