Failure to install filter after surgery -- confidential seven figure settlement
A 48 year old Elyria man died in the hospital two days after a vascular surgeon had performed surgery to improve circulation in a leg. The cause of death was a blood clot that traveled from his leg to his heart. Miraldi and Barrett proved that this patient had a risk for developing blood clots in his legs. The surgeon under the standard of care was required to install a filter, commonly called a "greenfield filter" in order to prevent blood clots from traveling to the heart or lungs.
