Radiologist fails to identify slipped capital remoral epiphysis in minor

A nine year old boy had a history of limping and pain in his left hip.  His pediatrician sent him to St. John Westshore for x-rays of the hip.  The x-rays showed a slipped capital femoral epiphysis that required immediate surgical intervention to stabilize.  At this time, the condition was stable. The radiologist read the x-ray as normal. Several days later, the young boy fell as his hip gave out on him as he exited from a school bus.  The slipped capital femoral epiphysis had become unstable.  Although the boy underwent surgery immediately, he developed avascular necrosis of his left hip and had to have three additional surgeries.  The condition left him with a permanent limp and the likelihood of hip replacement in his early 40's.

A lawsuit was filed and the case settled soon thereafter.  The terms of the settlement are confidential.
