Causes of a Spinal Cord Injury

A spinal cord injury is also known as SCI.  SCI is usually caused by an injury to the spinal cord or compression of the spinal cord and/or injury to the arteries that deliver nutrients and oxygen to the spinal cord.  Causes of spinal cord injuries are either traumatic or non-traumatic.

Common traumatic SCI include but are not limited to:
  • Motor vehicle accidents (car, motorcycle, truck)
  • Bicycle accidents
  • Falling
  • Sports injuries (such as football, gymnastics, hockey or rugby)
  • Being thrown from a horse while riding
  • Diving into shallow water
  • Acts of violence (such as a gunshot or knife wound)

Non-traumatic SCI causes include but are not limited to:
  • Arachnoiditis
  • Ischemia
  • Malformations in the blood supply system
  • Spina bifida
  • Spinal ataxia
  • Spinal cysts or tumors
  • Spinal fractures due to osteoporosis
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Transverse myelitis
